EKURHULENI OPENS NEW FIRE STATION AND UNLEASHES SOPHISTICATED FIRE ENGINES

The community of Etwatwa has something to celebrate following the opening of a new fire station by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The fully-fledged station boasts fire engines, ambulances, offices and other facilities to make the job of emergency officials better.

Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Ntombi Mekgwe officially opened facility and received five specialised fire engines aimed at beefing up the emergency services fleet in the region on Friday, August, 21.

The opening of the fire station and the acquisition of R14 million worth of new state of the art fire fighting vehicles indicates the Metro’s seriousness to effectively respond to emergencies that may erupt in the community of Etwatwa, Benoni and the surrounding areas.

“Today we are proud and humbled by the fact that in pursuance of bettering the lives of our people, the Ekurhuleni is officially opening Etwatwa Fire station and handing over fire engines to the Emergency Services whose role among others is to prevent fires when they occur, eliminate loss of life and reduce property loss,” stated Mayor Mekgwe.

The mayor further told the local residents that the newly constructed fire station and vehicles belonged to them, urging the community to guard jealously against any misuse of the facilities.

The metro has a plan to ensure that previously disadvantaged communities also get to enjoy state of the art facilities. The acquisition of the fire engines is part of a drive to replace the ageing fleet, thereby ensuring improved service delivery and efficient turn around response in times of emergencies.
