- A similar prioritization and filtering process was adopted by the parties that submitted
replies to the requested prioritization of the existing NFPA codes.
- Codes can be separated into three categories namely:
Priority 1 - Codes and standards which are of a high priority and whose implementation
is required.
Priority 2 - Codes and standards which whilst of value to the Fire Service
are of a lower priority and could be addressed in the longer term.
Priority 3 - Those codes and standards which may be considered once all the
above relevant codes and standards have been finalized.
- Codes and standards prioritized as 1 will be addressed immediately with the aim
of completion within 18 months from the commencement of this process.
- Where codes and standards are related to specific industries, ie. Petrochemical,
Electrical, Nuclear, Explosives or any other, these codes and standards should become
the responsibility of the relevant role players of that industry to adapt and revise
for South African Conditions.
- As these Industries and role players are required for their involvement members
of the Technical Committee will be tasked with facilitating and co-ordinating the
activities throughout the regions.
- Once all the priority 1 codes and standards have been completed the group of priority
2 codes will once again be prioritized and completed in a similar fashion. This
process will repeat itself until all codes and standards have been adapted and revised.
- Where similar codes and standards exist at the SABS all relevant NFPA codes and
standards will be forwarded to the SABS for their comments. Should no SABS document
exist for any subject which an existing NFPA code could utilized for, said NFPA codes should be suggested to the SABS for adoption as a South African code or standard.
- Where possible NFPA codes and standards should be utilized as Regulations to the Fire Brigade Services Act ( Act 99 of 1987 ), eg. Flammable Liquids Regulation, Dangerous Goods Regulation and others.
