This committee of the Institute is responsible for the delivering and co-ordinating
all aspects of the Degree Assembly programs.
The activities of the Education Committee are highlighted on this page under relevant headings.
Commitee Members The Education Committee consists of 10 members who are nominated by members and elected to office during the annual Institute Council meeting. Members are elected to office for a four year term and start their term directly after the Institute Council meeting. The minimum requirement for members of the committee is Advanced/Higher Diploma in Fire Technology, or equivalent. The committee is made up of a Chairperson, seven members and a secretary. The current members of the committee are:
Committee Projects The Education Committee's members are currently busy with the following projects: Specific Outcomes One of the requirements of the Council on Higher Education and the South African Qualifications Authority is to have a document available for students containing the "specific outcomes" for all subjects on all levels. This is not an easy task as the whole curriculum of every subject presented must be re-written into a new document. Currently all the members of the Education Committee responsible for subjects areworking on this process. The first draft of this document was discussed at the Committee's meeting on 10 November 2003 at Goudini Spa and will be finalised before the end of February 2004. IFSAC Degree Assembly The Institute is registered with the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), with their Head office based at the Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma, USA, on the Certificate as well as the Degree Assembly. The Institute have votes on both these assemblies. We have the following programs accredited on the Certificate Assembly Currently we don't have any programs accredited on the Degree Assembly and this is also a project that the members of the Education & Training Committee is busy with. We have decided to embark on this route as some of the work has been already been done with our application to the Council of Higher Education. The idea is to have our "Higher Diploma in Fire Technology" accredited as a program on the Degree Assembly. However, there is still a lot of work to be done before that as well the feedback awaited from the CHE before we will succeed. The current Chairperson of the Education Committee was also elected to the "Board of Governors" of the Degree Assembly during the IFSAC Congress in April 2003. Council on Higher Education After Success College cancelled the contract with the Institute in November 2001 the Institute decided to embark on the route to register with the Council on Higher Education as a tertiary institution. This was one of the goals when the Institute was established in 1959 and will maybe reached in the near future. The initiative from the Vice President Elect to establish a fire training college for Senior Officers is supported as it will form part of our proposed accreditation on the IFSAC Degree Assembly and the daily running of a tertiary training institution. Our initial application was submitted to the CHE in October 2002 with a site visit from them on 5 March 2003. The representatives from the CHE were Dr. Johan Brink and Messrs Wimpie Kruger & Michiel Ackermann with Messrs Petrus Brits, Willem Schroeder, Willy Barker, Flip van Staden and Mrs. Seugnet Moolman representing SAESI. Evaluation was done on the Institute's capability to administer our programs as well as the contents of our programs etc. This is where the specific outcomes document originated from. As there is still some documents to be supplied and updated we are hoping to receive interim registration. We received feedback from the Council on Higher Education on 16 August 2003 whereby they requested clarification and extra documentation in order to process our application. A total of 16 points was listed by them, not bad for a first time around. Mr. Renier Meyer from the Accreditation Committee and myself attended a meeting on 1 December 2003 with Mr. Theo Bhengu from the CHE whereby a lot of the outstanding issues were discussed and clarification given. It was also indicated by them that we will have to do the same application with the Department of Education in order to register as a private provider for tertiary education on the NQF 4, 5 & 6 levels. The members of the Education Committee as well as Mr. Renier Meyer is working on this process Our applications since April 2002 have grown from strength to strength as seen in the tables below:
